Volume 2 Number 14 / January 2003 So you decided to have a romantic evening with your significant other. The kids are with the baby sitter and you have prepared a wonderful meal. To make it even more romantic you will light those beautiful candles you got at your best friends candle party. When the dinner is over you decide to blow out the candles instead of using that great candle snuffer that came free with your candle purchase. Ooops! There goes candle wax right on your beautiful hardwood floor. Wow!? Leave it there and move on with your evening or take care of it now? As long as you do not step on it and “mash” it in it will be ok until the morning. In the morning get a zip lock baggie full of ice and set it on the wax until it becomes brittle. As soon as it does scrape it up with something plastic such as a spatula or credit card. If there is still a little bit left on your hardwood floor you can carefully use a small amount of mineral spirits, with proper ventilation, to clean up the residue. After this is done clean the area with the proper hardwood floor cleaner. You can find this wood floor care tip and the best way to clean hardwood floors at our site. “Being on the tightrope is living; everything else is waiting.” Karl Wallenda Volume 2 Number 15 / February 2003 “Carpet & keeping it looking new” Almost everyone has carpet in their house and keeping it clean is a challenge to all of us. The first thing you need to do is vacuum, do it frequently and no you cannot over vacuum. (Who has time to vacuum that much any way?) Make sure that you change the bag regularly and keep your vacuum in good working condition. When you have a spill make sure that you clean it up as soon as possible. If there is any solid matter you need to get that picked up and then proceed to clean up the moisture. Do not scrub the spot as all you will do is rub it into the fiber. You should pat it and continue to put fresh towels on the area until you have cleaned as much as possible. One big thing that most of us put off doing is having our carpets professionally cleaned. You should do this even if you clean them yourself. If you did not receive last months e-mail newsletter about candle wax we apologize as was not delivered correctly. It has been posted on our site as with the rest of them and can be archived there. We also have a really great new product, it is the Bona Kemi “Ready to Use” gallon bottles. It is the same great cleaner as in the 32 oz bottles but in the more economical gallon container. “Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names.” John F. Kennedy Volume 2 Number 16 / March 2003 “Sticky Mess” They told us for years that the solvent based adhesives we used to install hardwood floors with were going to go away and it finally did. It worked great and was simple to clean with mineral spirits. Most of the glues used now are urethane based with some of the wood manufactures having their own proprietary formulas. Even with the best most conscientious installer and expansion/contraction you can still get a few spots of glue on your floor. Not to worry. Dried up and excessive glue can be easily removed from hardwood floors. The cleaners come in a couple of different ways. Pre-moistened towelettes and liquid to name a few. Whichever you choose always read the directions thoroughly first. After cleaning the area clean the floor with your wood floor cleaner. If you still have problems or cannot remove the adhesive or need more information on care of hardwood floors, please give us a call and we would be more than happy to assist. We made another larger purchase of the Bona Kemi “Ready to Use” gallon bottles with the FREE 32 oz bottle attached, so that is 5 quarts for the price of the gallon.. It is the same great cleaner as in the 32 oz bottles but in the more economical gallon container. “There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.” Ken Olson, President, Chairman and Founder of Digital Equipment Corp., 1977 Volume 2 Number 17 / May 2003 “Wax On, Wax Off?” To wax or not to wax, that is the question? The answer is easy. If you have a urethane hardwood floor you should never wax the floor. We get allot of calls from people telling us that either the installer, their neighbor or a friend told them that it was a good idea to put a coat of wax on their hardwood floor. I even got a call the other day from a lady saying that she was told to use car wax on her floor. Really! It might look good for about 10 minutes but that will be it. It’s all downhill from there. New urethane hardwood floors were made to help eliminate the time consuming application of wax products. The best approach is and has always been to use the manufacturer’s cleaner or a general approved wood cleaner. If you floor ever gets dull you will need a product such as Fresh Finish or Refresher and not wax. CONTEST: We had a very gracious winner Jason T. of San Marcos, CA. www.floorcleaners.net/contest.htm “If you can’t get rid of the skeleton in your closet, you’d best teach it to dance.” George Bernard Shaw Volume 2 Number 18 / June 2003 “Let’s keep it in the bathtub” There was a young lady that called the other day with a problem. It seems that she had a stain on her wood floor and could not get it off. Being the savvy house cleaner that she is she knew that there was one product that always got rid of those tough stains. Softscrub. Yep, Softscrub. It did remove the stain but it also damaged the finish of her hardwood floor. This obviously is not the best way to clean hardwood floors. Currently I do not know of any flooring materials that recommended using this product on their floors. It is a great product on bathtubs but you need to keep it off the floor. Even laminate products such as Pergo and Quick Step will get damaged by using this product on them. There are many products that can be used to clean, maintain and remove stains from hardwood floors. If you have questions or concerns or have a problem you just cannot fix or need more information on how to clean hardwood floors please let us know and we will get you the information need to solve your problem. “People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid.” Soren Aabye Kierkegaard Volume 2 Number 19 / July 2003 “Welcome to Summer” With all of the heat and vacations we are going to keep it brief. “Never forget that only dead fish swim with the stream” Malcolm Muggeridge Volume 2 Number 21 / September 2003 “911” It is pretty unbelievable that it has already been two years since terrorists crashed planes into the World Trade center. Was it just a coincidence or was it all planned for 9/11? Many brave people have given their lives to keep this country free and we are thankful for each and every one of them. I heard an interview the other day from a young woman who had just emigrated from Russia and she was discussing her new found freedom and opportunities. She stated that one of the most amazing things to her was going to the grocery store and getting to choose from more than one kind of apple?! Where she came from you took what they had and that was that, there was no choice. We have become so accustom to living here and having the hard earned freedoms such as choice of religion, free speech and democratic leaders that we all get to vote on we do not look at the small things as freedoms. America has always been the greatest country in the world and always will be “Never mistake motion for action.” Ernest Hemingway Volume 2 Number 21 / October 2003 “Truth or Myth?” Sorry this is so late but as allot of you know we are in California and the fires really as bad as they say. We received a few phone calls last month with people concerned about their allergies and the carpeting in their houses. Comparison data from Sweden supports that there is no link between carpet usage and the incidence of asthma or allergies. The CRI is not aware of any published scientific research demonstrating a link between carpet and asthma or allergies. The study was based on historical figures for ten years which was reported by scientists at the Swedish Institute of Fiber and Polymer research. They found that while the use of carpet in Sweden had decreased since 1975, the occurrences of allergic reactions in the general population had increased. For more information please go to www.carpet-rug.com. One of the important things to remember is your vacuum. You should always make sure that your bag or canister does not need to be changed or emptied. Make sure that you vacuum on a consistent basis and move furniture whenever possible. For those of you with allergies or asthma there are some great new HEPA vacuums that help keep the airborne dust to a minimum. These vacuums make a huge difference. “A little inaccuracy sometimes saves a ton of explanation.” H.H. Munro Volume 2 Number 22 / November 2003 “Is it really that hard?” There always seems to be concern over the true hardness of wood floors. Most of the concerns are over denting in ones hardwood floor. The homeowner has been told they bought a “hard” wood and in fact if they did, why did it dent? The most common ranking for hardness is the Janka hardness. This is a test that measures the force required to embed a .0444 inch steel ball to half it’s diameter in wood. Accepted industry wide, the Janka rating reflects a particular wood species ability to withstand denting and wear. So why do you get dents? All floors will dent and scratch even if you were to have Patagonian Rosewood (3840) vs. Northern red Oak (1290). I have included a link below to a page that has a list of some of the most common woods used in the industry today. If you have more questions about this subject or any others please write. http://www.wflooring.com/Technical_Info/Species_Tech_Info/species_hardness.htm “It is now possible for a flight attendant to get a pilot pregnant.” Richard J.
