Volume 3 Number 24 / January 2004 Happy New Year We get allot of calls about minor scratches in wood floors. Obviously it is relative as to how bad the scratches are and what needs to be done to repair them. With a newer wood floor most of the time it is better left alone. If you have a hardwood floor with a stain on it you might need to get a Touch up kit if the scratch is very deep. For more hardwood floor care go to the archives on our site. If the area has a normal wear and tear pattern such as a walkway you could consider a “refresher” type product to bring back the luster. Please check before applying any of these products due to the fact that most has a 60 gloss and quite a few of the factory finishes are a 20 or 40. Please remember that when applying a refresher product it will not match the factory finish exactly and this is why you have to consider how bad the scratches are. If they are only minimal you might want “live with it” until it gets really bad. If you have questions about when or what to use please write and we will be happy to try to help you make an informed decision. “Everything that can be invented has been invented.” Charles H. Duell, Commisioner, U.S. Office of Patents, 1899 Volume 3 Number 25 / February 2004 “Do as they say, not as we say” The annual flooring show was a couple of weeks ago in Las Vegas. Of course I had to attend, ya know, all those “business” meetings. Any way there was quite a bit of fairly new and brand new wood flooring manufactures most of which are from outside the country. In conversation with them they recommended “we don’t care” to “they should wax it every now & then” as ways to the best way to clean their hardwood floor. This is not the best hardwood floor maintenance information. We always say that you should follow the instructions from the wood floor manufacturer but I had never heard of waxing a urethane floor. If the company you bought it from wants you to clean/maintain you floor in what you feel is an odd way, you should always try it in an inconspicuous place first. The challenge for us is when someone calls and wants to buy some wax for their no wax wood floor because the manufacture told them to. The goal is for us no matter where you get your cleaning product and what kind of help you need that we can assist in a way that there will be no ill lasting effects to your floor. remember cleaning hardwood floors should be simple. “Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go.” Oscar Wilde Volume 3 Number 27 / April 2004 “Uh-oh” Of late one of the big concerns has been damage to laminate (floors such as Pergo, Wilson Art, Quick Step, etc.) floors. Many people have called after damaging their floor and wanting to purchase something to “refresh” their floor. I am sure a few of you have used a different four letter word besides uh-oh. The problem with laminate floors, which is one of the many differences from real wood floors is the fact that there is not a product available to repair the finish. Most of the times with a laminate floor once the damage is done it is irreversible. When it comes to cleaning, only use the manufacturers cleaner if available, if not use a recommended laminate floor cleaner. If you have spotting or a stain that you cannot remove do not use any harsh chemicals or scrub pads as this most probably will permanently damage the floor. If you are going to try and experiment with such please try in a corner or closet first. Your best bet is to contact the manufacturer and see what they recommend, if you cannot get a hold of them call or write to us and we will get their number for you. Discount! Volume 3 Number 28 / May 2004 “Carpet Cleaning 101” Many of you choose to clean your own carpets but please take a few tips with you if you choose to do so. Many of the do-it-yourself and grocery store machines do not have enough extraction power to adequately clean your carpet. One of the best places to get equipment is an equipment rental location. Avoid over wetting of the carpet as this may cause separation of the backing. Use a cleaning solution with a PH of less than 10 and preferably near 9. Using too much detergent is undesirable as buildup of detergent is one of the most common causes of resoiling complaints. If you have a caret with stain resistant treatment you must only use a cleaner that is formulate for this purpose. When done cleaning use fans to move air across the carpet to reduce drying time. If you choose to hire a professional you can call the Institute of inspection, cleaning and restoration at 800-835-4624 and they can give you a directory of professionals in your area. Specials! We have quite a few items on sale right now so you can go and take a peak to see if there is anything you need. “Democracy does not guarantee equality of conditions- it only guarantees equality of opportunity.” Irving Kristol
