“As clean as it gets” floor maintenance the write way. May 2005 July 2005 September 2005 November 2005 Volume 4 Number 34 / May 2005 “Oil or water?” While most of the new finishes out there are water based there are still plenty of good oil based ones. If you are looking to get you wood floor screened and recoated or have enough damage that you need to get a full sand & refinish you should inquire about the finish being used ahead of time. Even though they can have the same gloss level, satin, semi-gloss or gloss, the difference between an oil base and a water base finish can be dramatic. One of the best options is to have your refinisher show you a couple of boards with the different finishes on them, especially if you are switching shine levels or going from water based to oil or vice-versa. Another option would be to ask if there are some referrals he has done recently that you can go get a look at. Many installers do not feel this is necessary but having your wood floor refinished is quite an under taking and you would like to get the end result to meet your expectations as close as possible. once this is all done do not forget the wood floor care, wood floor cleaning and maintenance of your hardwood floor. Specials “If you can count your money, you don’t have a billion dollars.” J. Paul Getty Volume 4 Number 35 / July 2005 “Snap, Crackle Pop” Snap, crackle, pop are the sounds that you hear from you wood floors in the middle of the night. This is especially common with “floated” floors (floors that have the boards glued to each other instead of glued or nailed to the floor). Is it normal? Yes. Even though some of these products do not seem like wood, such as a Quick Step or Pergo laminate product, you will still hear these noises. The term that is used in the wood industry is that wood floors are always “alive” which means that they are always moving, expanding and contracting. This becomes more prevalent in the summer months when the heat starts to come. So the next time you hear your floors making those sounds don’t worry it is normally. “I think it would be a good idea.” Mahatma Gandhi, when asked what he thought of western civilization. Volume 4 Number 36 / September 2005 “It cannot get any worse” First there was 9/11 and we thought that was going to be the one disaster we would always be looking back at in September, which we always will but then came along this “Katrina”. Katrina came and went ravaged thousands of people’s lives but we finally got to a point where we thought we could start to clean up and move forward. Well, then comes Rita and it got worse. Hopefully now there will be some changes made as to how this great country responds to these tragedies. One of our best suppliers is in Lake Charles, LA and they finally got power back yesterday and will be able to move towards getting back in business. Our thoughts and prayers got out to all of the affected people that just a little or everything Specials The special this month is on 3 products, the Bruce Floor Care Kit, Bruce No Wax Floor Cleaner and the Floorcleaners.net Hardwood floor cleaner. Volume 4 Number 37 / November 2005 “It’s what on top that counts” Often we get calls about what to use to clean hardwood floors with and lately the most common one has been Bamboo. What matters with the Bamboo wood floors, like any other wood floor, is the finish on top. There are basically 3 different kinds of finishes – urethane, wax and oil. All of the Bamboo floors we have seen have some form of urethane finish on them. Now this is not to say that there might be some with a different finish (you can check with the manufacturer/distributor) but we have not seen any yet. Regardless of the wood, if you have a urethane finish you can use an approved wood floor cleaner. This can be done without any concern of damaging your floor. If there is still some concerns you can either call or write us or get a local hardwood man out to look at it.
