There are some great new products on the market to remove urine. It works on all urine, yes even human. They can be used to help eliminate stains and odor if used correctly. Many of these products even come with a black light to help pinpoint the exact location. (Yes just like on CSI)

These products work great on items such as furniture and carpeting but we have yet to see the desired results on wood flooring. Never the less they come with specific instructions and a money back guarantee which make them worth a try.

“Refinishing Part 1”
This will be the first part in a continuing series of how and what to expect when refinishing your hardwood floor. You will need to plan to do the entire wood floor at one time. Even the best of the best cannot do parts of the floor at different times without it being noticeable. If this is necessary you should try to stop in a doorway or some sort of unnoticeable transition. Due to the nature of the finish dry time related to the temperature, humidity and floor conditions it is impossible to get the same results from areas done at different times.

When planning is started you should figure it will be anywhere from 1-3 days to complete. This might entail you being out of the residence to obtain the best results. You will also need to consider that everything that is in the areas to be refinished will need to be removed for the duration of the entire job no matter how small. If it is on the floor it will need to be moved. This is the start to many parts in this series to help those of you have a smother experience in the refinishing of your wood floor.

“Refinishing Part 2”

There are quite a few different finishes, such as oil or water based or different levels of shine, available to your contractor today. Some of you will be able to see a difference some will not. This is an item that should be up for discussion before the job has started. There is even a good chance you can get samples of the different finishes before the job is started.

If you have indoor pets they should be out of the house during this process. Even though most all of the finishes today are very “friendly” this will help keep any accidents from happening. Also if you do have indoor pets (dogs, cats) there is no way for your installer to guarantee there will not be any animal hair in the finish when he is complete. Even with the best HEPA vacuum you can almost be assured that will be some hair in the finish when complete.

“Refinishing Part 3”

When your contractor is complete with your floor you still need to give it time to “cure”. There is a difference between “dry” time and “cure” time. The cure time is the time it takes to get to its maximum hardness. This will vary depending on the weather and the product being used and your installer should be able to give you a heads up on this.

Initially when moving furniture back in you should be very careful and check all furniture legs and get felt protectors on the ones without. You do not want to go through the trouble and expense of refinishing just to ruin it in one quick swipe. If the opportunity is there to pay your contractor to move back some of your large appliances this would be money well spent. You can look at it as very inexpensive insurance.

“Refinishing Part 2.5”

I have to apologize but I am going to take one step back in the refinishing process. There is something that should be at least considered. One of the largest manufacturers of floor finish has a system called the DCS (dust containment system). While most floor refinishers do not own these they can be rented from their local supplier.

If you have a home that for what ever reason need to have the dust kept to an absolute minimum this system might be for you. This is especially true if there is someone in the house that has severe allergy problems. The DCS is as close to dust free as you can get.

Specials: No sales pitch but just some valuable information. We have made a large purchase of Armstrong hardwood, laminate and vinyl cleaners that we have made available at the lowest prices in the US with a 125% guarantee. We also have an exclusive on the Quick Step concentrated cleaner.
